« The entire experience moved and affected me to tears. » Natalie Therese and her companion were driving home from a bed-and-breakfast near the Columbia River in Washington.
And they noticed what appeared to be a large bunch of fur in the middle of the highway through the fog.
Therese was startled and felt they needed to come to a halt. « [I] began yelling to pull over and watch out, » Therese informed The Dodo.
As she got closer, she noticed them: three baby otters stuck on the street. « My partner mistook them for a bunch of dirt or something! » According to Therese.
Putting the puzzle pieces together, she noticed she had seen the otters’ mother flee an approaching car.
The babies, who were far too young to know what to do, had simply retreated to the street.
They were now alone, with their terrified mother watching from the nearby woods.
Therese chose to help them in return for safety and began pointing the shaking babies in the right direction.
« I gently urged them off the road, » Therese explained. Therese stood by, introducing them to their mother, making sure they all knew what to do.
« I stood back by the car, waited for the mother to come out, and then all three babies ran off the road together, » Therese explained.
« [Then]I waited a few minutes longer to ensure they didn’t run back to the road. »
